Colemanite, a borate mineral, hydrated calcium borate (Ca2B6O115H2O), was the primary source of borax until the 1930s. It is found as colorless, brilliant crystals and masses in Paleogene and Neogene sediments (formed 65.5 to 2.6 million years ago), where it has been derived from ulexite and borax. Colemanite has been a popular natural source of insoluble boron for many decades. It contributes oxide to glazes similarly to Ulexite (though the latter also sources Na2O). When colemanite is heated, higher percentages of colemanite in a glaze can cause wrinkling of the fired surface due to a phenomenon known as ‘decrepitation’ (very active decomposition). If enough colemanite is present, the glaze layer can actually delay, if not disintegrate (pieces of glaze can spit off the ware onto other ware or the kiln shelf). Ulexite is thus a better choice for many applications. If Colemanite must be used, screen out any materials coarser than 200 mesh or ball mill the glaze. Gum or other binders can also be useful. Colemanite can be found in Turkey, Chile, and California.
