Global Tube Skin Thermocouples Market Definition
Tube skin thermocouples provide an efficient means of measuring the temperature of tube walls in petrochemical plants and boiler and superheater tubes in power plants. Constructed from metalized MgO insulated thermocouple wire (CERAMO®), they range in length from a few feet to over 50 feet. A shield can be added that curves around the pipe and over the joints and is packed with high-temperature insulation to prevent heat transfer from the joints and provide more accurate temperature readings. Expansion loops or spirals compensate for movement as the pipe thermally expands. Mounting brackets can be welded along the tube for added security.
The surface temperatures of the tubes in boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers are measured using tube skin thermocouples. They can be ordered with a weld pad that conforms to the tube’s curve or a knife edge for quick response. Lead wire or sealed head extensions are offered for termination.

A failure of the tube skin thermocouple is seen on the heating heater. The skin thermocouple used is type K (13 AWG wire), mineral insulated with SS 446 sheath material (3/8 inch OD, 1/16-inch sheath thickness). Of his 16 thermocouples installed in one of the heaters, 7 skin thermocouples failed within 3 months of installation. One thermocouple fails and the second thermocouple fails immediately after recovery. Four thermocouple readings are unstable after a heater failure. Skin temperature dropped from about 925°F during normal operation to 596°F. It then rose to 1003°F in 6 minutes. Then another 8 minutes and he was back at 500°F.
