A retinoscope is a device used to shine a beam of light directly into the eye to assess the refractive error and determine the type of eye prescription that is further needed. A handheld instrument called retinoscope projects a beam of light into the eye. When the light is moved vertically and horizontally across the eye, the examiner observes the movement of the reflected light from the back of the eye, and this reflection is called the red reflex. The examiner then introduces lenses in front of the eye and as the power of the lenses changes, there will be a corresponding change in the direction and pattern of the reflection. The examiner keeps changing the lenses until reaching a lens power which indicates the refractive error of the patient. When the practitioner shines the light of a retinoscope into an eye, they observe the light reflected from the retina. This reflected light is called the retinoscopic reflex which looks like a red light inside the pupil.

Depending on the person’s refractive error, when the practitioner moves the retinoscope, the ret reflex moves in a certain way inside the pupil. Trial lenses are used to measure the amount of movement that a ret reflex has so that the refractive error can be estimated accurately. There are two types of Retinoscopes known as Streak and Spot. Streak retinoscopes consist of a light source that produces a line or streak of light. The streak of light can be easily changed by moving the slide knob or sleeve. Spot retinoscopes consist of a light source that produces a spot of light. The spot of light is changed by moving its slide knob.
