North America Stormwater Management market
Stormwater management is the process of controlling stormwater runoff that primarily originates from impervious surfaces such as parking lots, driveways, and roofs. Rural areas usually consist of infiltrated areas such as farmlands, meadows, and forests. These areas absorb and infiltrate precipitation, causing small runoff. Urban areas have a higher percentage of impermeable surfaces such as sidewalks and roofs. Runoff from these areas rapidly overwhelms natural waterways and streams, causing channel erosion, localized flooding, and property damage. Rainwater can carry contaminants such as motor oil and household cleaners from these impermeable surfaces. This water flows straight from the street into streams and rivers with little or no treatment. The main objective of stormwater management is to reduce and control this runoff as much as possible while removing pollutants and improving water quality. This is essential to support the health functioning and resilience of communities and ecosystems.
Market Drivers
The Ontario government has invested $25 million in building, upgrading and rehabilitating stormwater and sewer infrastructure, including USD4 million for the City of Toronto. USD2 million to improve aging stormwater and wastewater system infrastructure for greater efficiency and reliability. Funds can be used to build stormwater infrastructure, upgrade sewers and pumping stations, and clear debris from stormwater management ponds. The rest will used to improve wastewater monitoring and public reporting capabilities and also purchase and install monitoring equipment and software, record when and where sewage spills and bypasses occur, and improve or implement real-time public reporting systems. This is expected to drive the stormwater management market in Canada.
In June 2019, the City of San Antonio awarded $2.6 million to researchers at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to support three stormwater management projects over the next three years. Each project protects the Edwards Aquifer by reducing the risk of pollution from spills. This project will explore the possibility of using four different types of permeable sidewalks to manage stormwater runoff while also mitigating the urban heat island effect. This is expected to drive the stormwater management market in the US.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is investing $53 million in the Gulf of Mexico for wetland restoration, stormwater treatment and control, nature-based infrastructure, resilient coastlines, and other ecosystem initiatives. Funded by the Infrastructure Invest and Jobs Act (IIJA), the investment will provide more than $10 million annually through 2026, while restoring wetlands, stormwater treatment and control, nature-based infrastructure, and building resilient communities. Support coastlines and other initiatives essential to creating health and the vibrant Gulf of Mexico. This project is expected to drive the stormwater management market in North America.

In 2022, San Diego signed a loan with the Environmental Protection Agency to restore the city's aging stormwater system. The loan will allow up to $733 million to be invested in stormwater infrastructure projects over the next five years. This is his one of the biggest infrastructure investments in recent years. The mayor signed the first installment of $225 million. The loan will fund more than 80 projects, including the restoration and replacement of degraded stormwater infrastructure.
Problems in Supply Chain
The challenge lies in the interruption of the supply of raw materials. This is because the movement and transportation of raw materials will be stopped, which will have a negative impact on manufacturers. This affects production and leads to reduced product sales. Suppliers of stormwater management equipment are also experiencing backlash as their imports and exports may be suspended for certain reasons.
