Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is a laboratory procedure used to determine the susceptibility or resistance of a bacterial or fungal isolate to various antimicrobial agents. In-vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing can be performed using various type of formats such as disk diffusion, agar dilution, broth microdilution, broth macrodilution, and a concentration gradient test. The results of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) are used to guide the choice of appropriate antimicrobial therapy for the patient. Susceptibility results are reported as the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), which is the lowest concentration of the antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of the organism. Several characteristics such as whether the organism is susceptible, intermediate, or resistant to the antimicrobial agent can be determined using MIC values. According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), antimicrobial resistance is a significant threat to global health, and it is estimated that by 2050, it could cause more deaths than cancer. The market for antimicrobial susceptibility testing is driven by the increase in prevalence of infectious diseases. Several infectious disease outbreaks such as Shigella, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitides, and Salmonella serotype typhi which has been attributed to lack of water supply, sanitation, and hygiene are rising the demand for antimicrobial susceptibility testing in the forecast period. Moreover, increase in geriatric population across various parts of the country along with certain type of diseases influenza, pneumonia, shingles, and others which are associated with them in their elder age is further expected to propel the growth of global antimicrobial susceptibility testing market in the forecast period.
Increase in Prevalence of Infectious Diseases
According to the report published by Worldometer in 2023, it has been observed that in 2021 around 106,771,290 cases of COVID-19 were reported in United States of America causing 1,162,471 deaths, followed by 44,971,469 cases of COVID-19 in India causing 531,692 deaths, 40,021,949 cases of COVID-19 in France leading to 166,811 deaths, and so on.
Growth in Geriatric Population
According to the report published by Population Reference Bureau (PRB) based on countries with the oldest populations in the world, it has been concluded that Japan is the foremost country in the world accounting for around 28.2% of geriatric people out of total population, followed by Italy with 22.8% of geriatric population, Greece, and Portugal with 21.8 %, and Germany with 21.4% of geriatric people out of the total population.
Recent Developments
- In October 2020, the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (CARB), 2020-2025, was introduced to improve the health and wellbeing of all Americans by changing the course of antibiotic resistance. This plan continues to prioritize infection prevention and control to slow the spread of resistant infections and optimize the antibiotic use.
- In 2019, the UK Government published a 20-year vision for tackling AMR and a 5-year action plan. Earlier, in 2018, the U.K. government launched a five-year national action plan detailing the contribution of the U.K. in controlling the growing global problem of antimicrobial resistance. The plan’s aim was to achieve a 10% fall in drug-resistant infections by 2025 and a 15% drop in human antibiotic use. The plan also targets to eliminate healthcare-related infections by 2024 and is expected to pave the way for investments in small biotech companies, which are working to reduce resistant infections.
- In December 2019, the Government of Australia invested USD 8 million to support antimicrobial resistance in Australia and the Pacific Island countries for combating the AMR situation.
- In December 2019, the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases allocated USD 102.5 million for over seven years for the Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group, a global consortium of experts leading a clinical antibacterial resistance research network.
- In September 2019, a U.K. aid program, the Fleming Fund, working for low and middle-income countries, announced to invest USD 3.3 million in One Health AMR surveillance systems to improve laboratory infrastructure and offer six fellowships to scientists in Pakistan.
- In May 2022, Qualigen Therapeutics announced that NanoSynex Ltd, a company with whom Qualigen recently entered into definitive agreements to acquire a majority stake, featured at BioMed Israel. Innovative Technology by NanoSynex focuses to accelerate antimicrobial susceptibility test results times by six-fold.
- In April 2022, COPAN Diagnostics demonstrated its range of fully automated solutions for identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) in clinical microbiology at the 32nd European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID 2022). COPAN demonstrated the Food and Drug Administration-cleared Colibri, a fully automated specimen workup instrument designed to prepare MALDI-TOF ID targets and create bacterial suspensions for AST.
- In 2021, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. and Q-linea introduce AStar Technology, a rapid antimicrobial susceptibility (AST) testing system that provides true minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) data in less than 6 hours. Traditional AST technology can take up to 72 hours to get results.
- In August 2022, BD, a leading global medical technology company, announced worldwide commercial collaboration with Accelerate Diagnostics, Inc. which will help both the companies to address the global threat of antimicrobial resistance.
- In July 2020, Cepheid, a subsidiary of Danaher launched a novel rapid molecular test for TB which can detect multi-drug resistance to first line and second-line drugs simultaneously. The profiling can be achieved in less than 90 minutes. This will drive the antimicrobial testing market in the coming years.
